An H1 with the site name, a blockquote with a one-line summary, optional lines of key facts, then H2 sections that list pages as “- [title](URL): description”. An H2 called Optional, placed last, marks pages a reader can skip. Keep it short; it is a map of the site, not a copy of it.
Adoption varies by vendor and changes without notice, so treat the file as a cheap, low-risk signal rather than a guarantee. It takes ten minutes and cannot hurt. Publish it, then track whether the answers about your brand change; that second step is what helloAISearch does.
At the site root, served as text/plain: https://example.com/llms.txt. It must be reachable without JavaScript or a login. If your framework serves an HTML page for unknown paths, check that the URL returns the raw text; the validator tool tells you.
