How AI search visibility works

How does AI search visibility work?

AI search visibility is how often AI engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity name your brand when someone asks a question in your category. The engine writes one answer and names a handful of brands; there is no page 2. Your visibility is measured by sending the questions your buyers ask to each engine on a schedule and counting how often you are named compared with your competitors, which is called share of voice.

How do AI search engines decide which brands to recommend?

AI engines recommend the brands that are described most clearly and most consistently, across the most sources, as the answer to that exact question. Engines that search the web (Perplexity, and ChatGPT, Gemini, and Claude when they browse) favour pages that answer the question directly and the third-party roundups and review sites that rank for it. Answers from the model's own memory favour brands that were widely and consistently described in its training data. In both cases, a brand with no page answering the question is rarely named.

What kind of content gets cited most by AI search engines?

AI engines cite content that answers a specific question in its first paragraph, in complete declarative sentences: direct-answer pages for "best X for Y" questions, comparison pages, "alternatives to" pages, how-to guides with numbered steps, definitions, and FAQ sections with FAQPage structured data. Third-party lists, review sites, and forum threads are cited heavily too, so being listed there matters as much as your own pages.

What is the difference between AEO, GEO, and SEO?

SEO is ranking in search engine results such as Google's list of links. AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) are two names for the same newer practice: getting your brand named and cited inside answers written by AI engines such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity. SEO is measured by rank position; AEO and GEO are measured by how often you are named, or share of voice.

What is answer engine optimization and how do I measure it?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your brand named in AI-generated answers. You measure it by tracking a fixed set of buyer questions on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity on a schedule, recording which brands each answer names, and calculating your share of voice: your mentions divided by the mentions of every brand you track, per engine, per question, over time. A rising share after you publish a page is the sign the work is paying off.

How do I get my brand recommended by ChatGPT?

To get recommended by ChatGPT, publish a page that answers the exact question your buyers ask ("best [category] for [audience]") with your brand in the first paragraph, publish comparison and alternatives pages against the competitors ChatGPT already names, describe your company the same way everywhere it appears, allow OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot in robots.txt, add Organization and FAQPage structured data, and get listed on the third-party roundups ChatGPT cites. Then track the same questions weekly to see whether it worked.

Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my company when people ask about my industry?

ChatGPT usually skips a company for one of four reasons: no page on its site answers the question being asked, the company is described inconsistently or vaguely across the web, it is missing from the third-party lists and review sites ChatGPT reads, or its site blocks the crawlers ChatGPT uses. Ask ChatGPT the question, read who it names and why, and publish the page that answers that question with your company in it.

How do I get my company mentioned in Claude's answers?

Claude names companies that are clearly and consistently described as the answer to the question, both in what it learned during training and, when it searches the web, in pages that answer the question directly. Publish direct-answer and comparison pages, keep your company description identical across your site, profiles, and directories, allow ClaudeBot in robots.txt, and get listed on the sites that cover your category. Claude often names different brands than ChatGPT, so track it separately.

How do I get my website cited in Perplexity answers?

Perplexity searches the web for every answer and cites the pages it used, so to get cited you need a page that ranks for the question and answers it in the first paragraph. Keep the page crawlable by PerplexityBot, use the question as a heading, add FAQPage structured data, and get mentioned on the pages Perplexity already cites for that question. Track which URLs it cites when a competitor is named; those are the pages to out-write or get listed on.

How do I show up in Google Gemini recommendations for my category?

Gemini draws heavily on Google's index and Knowledge Graph, so the basics of Google visibility carry over: pages that rank for your category questions, a clear Organization entity with sameAs links to your profiles, consistent business facts, and structured data. Add a page that answers each "best [category] for [audience]" question directly, and allow Google-Extended if you want your content used in Gemini. Then track Gemini's answers separately from Google rankings.

How long does it take to start showing up in ChatGPT answers?

For specific long-tail questions, a new page can start appearing in ChatGPT answers in two to four weeks once it is crawled, because ChatGPT searches the web for many questions. Broad category questions usually take two to three months, and answers from the model's own memory change only when the model is retrained. Track the same questions weekly and judge the trend over several weeks, since answers vary from run to run.

Tools and technical setup

What are the best tools for tracking my brand's visibility in AI search results?

The best tools for tracking brand visibility in AI search send your buyers' questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity on a schedule and show which brands each answer names. helloAISearch does this from $29 a month, shows the answer text with your brand highlighted, measures share of voice against named competitors, and recommends one move after every scan. The engines most often name Profound, Otterly AI, and Peec AI as well; social listening tools like Brand24 cannot see AI answers.

How do I track brand mentions in ChatGPT?

To track brand mentions in ChatGPT, send it the questions your customers ask on a fixed schedule, record whether your brand or a competitor is named in each answer, and compare the results over time. ChatGPT has no built-in mention report, so you do it by hand in a spreadsheet, script it against the OpenAI API, or use a tool such as helloAISearch that does it across ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity.

What schema markup helps a website get cited by AI search engines?

The schema that helps most is Organization (with sameAs links to your official profiles), WebSite, FAQPage on pages with question-and-answer content, HowTo on step-by-step guides, Article on posts, BreadcrumbList, and Product or SoftwareApplication for what you sell. Structured data does not guarantee a citation, but it makes your facts unambiguous and easy for engines to quote.

Does an llms.txt file help with AI search visibility?

An llms.txt file is cheap to add and can help AI tools find your most important pages, but no major AI engine has confirmed it uses llms.txt to choose which brands to name. Treat it as a small, low-cost addition, not a strategy: direct-answer pages, consistent company facts, and crawler access in robots.txt matter far more.

AI search and B2B buying

Is AI search going to replace Google for B2B buyers?

AI search is not replacing Google outright for B2B buyers, but it is taking over the shortlist step: many buyers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or Perplexity for the best tools in a category before they search Google or visit a vendor site. Google itself now answers many of those questions with AI Overviews. For a B2B company that means being named in AI answers matters alongside Google rankings, and both need to be tracked.

ChatGPT vs Google for B2B research: what is the difference?

Google returns a list of pages for the buyer to read and compare; ChatGPT reads for the buyer and returns one written answer with a short list of recommended vendors. For B2B research that means Google rewards ranking a page, while ChatGPT rewards being named in the answer itself. Buyers often use ChatGPT to build a shortlist and Google to check it, so vendors need visibility in both.
