How-to · competitor visibility in AI

How do you monitor competitors' visibility in AI chatbots?

To monitor competitors' visibility in AI chatbots, pick the 3 to 7 competitors you actually lose deals to, write the 10 to 20 questions your buyers ask, send those questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity on a fixed schedule, and record every brand each answer names. Each competitor's share of voice is its mentions divided by the mentions of every tracked brand, per engine and per prompt. SEO tools and social listening do not see this, because a chatbot answer is generated for one person and never published. helloAISearch runs the schedule for you, shows the answer text with every brand highlighted, and charts share of voice per competitor after every scan.

What the tool has to do

Competitor monitoring in AI answers only works if the counting is consistent. Whether you track by hand or with a tool, hold to these.

  1. 1

It queries the engines directly, on a schedule.

Not web-listening for your name on other sites. The tool should send your customers' questions to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity itself and record what came back.

  2. 2

It shows the actual answer, not a score.

You need the sentence where you were named, or the sentence where a competitor was named instead. A visibility index without the text underneath is not actionable.

  3. 3

It measures share of voice against named competitors.

How often each engine names you versus each competitor, per prompt, over time. This is the number that tells you whether anything you changed worked.

  4. 4

It tells you what to do next.

The gap between "you were not named" and "here is the page to write" is where most tools stop. Look for a recommendation tied to a specific prompt.

  5. 5

A solo operator can afford it and read it daily.

Entry pricing under $60 a month, no seat minimums, and a feed you can get through with coffee rather than a dashboard you open quarterly.

The tools, including the one the engines leave out

We run helloAISearch on ourselves. Between July 17, 2026 and August 31, 2026 it recorded 350 answers from ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini across 7 category prompts; this prompt joined the tracked set on October 21, 2026, and helloAISearch has not yet been named in its answers. The “named” column is how many of those answers named each tool. Competitor descriptions are how the engines characterised them; we have not added claims of our own.

Step by step

  1. 1

Name the competitors and keep the list fixed.

Share of voice is always relative to a list. Choose the brands you lose to, not every company in the category, and do not change the list between runs or the trend breaks.

  2. 2

Write the questions buyers ask, in their words.

"Best [category] for [audience]", "alternatives to [competitor]", "[competitor] vs [competitor]", "is [competitor] worth it". Competitor-name prompts show you how each rival is described; category prompts show who gets recommended.

  3. 3

Run every question on every engine, on a schedule.

Answers vary between runs. Weekly is the minimum, daily for the prompts nearest a purchase. Keep each engine separate: a competitor can lead on ChatGPT and be absent on Claude.

  4. 4

Log every brand named, not just yours.

For each answer, record which tracked brands appear, their position, and the sentence. Perplexity also lists its sources; record the domains it cited when a competitor won.

  5. 5

Read the gaps, then write one page.

Sort prompts by how far the leading competitor is ahead of you. The biggest gap is the next page to write: a comparison, a direct answer, or a plainer product page. Re-run the prompt after the next scan.

Questions people ask next

Can Semrush or Ahrefs monitor competitors in ChatGPT?+

Both now sell AI visibility features on top of their SEO suites: Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit from about $99 a month per domain, and Ahrefs Brand Radar on top of an Ahrefs plan. A dedicated tool like helloAISearch starts at $29 a month and is built only for AI answers, so most teams keep their SEO suite for Google and add one.

How many competitors should I track?+

Three to seven. Fewer and you miss who the engines actually recommend; more and the share-of-voice chart becomes noise. helloAISearch Lite tracks 5 competitors, Studio 10, and Pro and Agency unlimited.

Does social listening catch competitor mentions in AI chatbots?+

No. Brand24, Mention, and similar tools watch published pages and social posts. A chatbot answer is generated on the spot and never published, so the only way to see it is to ask the question yourself and keep the answer.

What do I do when a competitor wins a prompt?+

Read the sentence where it was named and the sources the engine cited, then publish the page that answers that exact question with your product in it. helloAISearch turns the biggest gap into Today's Move after every scan.
