What is AI share of voice?
Share of voice in AI search is the percentage of brand mentions across a set of AI answers that belong to one brand: mentions of that brand divided by mentions of every brand tracked, for the same prompts, engines, and period.

It is the AI-answer equivalent of a rank. Ranks do not exist inside a generated answer, but share does: if the engines named you 7 times and everyone you track 100 times in total, your share of voice is 7%.
Share of voice is only meaningful against a fixed set of competitors and prompts. Change the prompt list and the number moves for reasons that have nothing to do with your content. Pick the competitors you actually lose to and the prompts your customers actually ask, then hold them steady.
Track it per engine as well as in total. A brand can be at 20% on Perplexity and 2% on ChatGPT; the total hides which engine is the home territory and which one ignores you.
Example
Over 30 days, across 12 prompts and four engines, the engines named Competitor A 31%, Competitor B 18%, you 7.2%, and Competitor C 4%. Your share moved from 4.1% to 7.2% after you published two comparison pages.

Questions people ask next
How is AI share of voice calculated?
Count the times each tracked brand is named across the answers in the period. Divide your count by the total. helloAISearch does this per prompt, per engine, and overall, and charts it over 30 days.
What is a good share of voice?
Relative to your competitors, not an absolute. Passing the competitor directly above you is the goal; the number that gets you there depends on how many brands the engines name in your category.
How often should I measure it?
Weekly at minimum, daily for the prompts that matter most. Single measurements are noisy because answers vary between runs; the trend over weeks is the signal.
